A zeppelin was a type of aircraft. It had a fabric-covered metal framework containing a number of bags filled with hydrogen. Engines propelled the aircraft and passengers would ride on external compartments. Zeppelins were first flown commercially in 1910 and, by mid-1914, they had carried over 10,000 passengers on over 1,500 flights.

During World War I, the German military made extensive use of zeppelins as bombers, killing over 500 people in Britain. The defeat of Germany in 1918 temporarily slowed down the airship business and all zeppelins had to be surrendered under the terms of the Treaty of Versailles.

The restrictions were eventually lifted and in the 1930s, some aircrafts were operating regular transatlantic flights from Germany to North America and Brazil. Ultimately, the Hindenburg disaster in 1937 (when an aircraft caught fire and killed 35 people) along with political and economic issues, led to the end of the zeppelin era.
