Santa Muerte is a female folk saint revered mostly in Mexico. Millions pray to her and wish they    healed from illness or malaise. When a person dies, family members pray the deceased person    have a safe delivery to the afterlife.

The Catholic church in Mexico would prefer if people    worship the folk saint. It has become more and more popular and public, especially in Mexico City where a shrine was initiated of Santa Muerte in 2001. Still, many Mexicans would rather if devotees    display their veneration in public.

Due to its popularity, however, it is likely that others feel it is time the Catholic church    more accepting of indigenous Mesoamerican beliefs and practices.
